But one study done by Drs. Vince Felitti and Bob Anda, known as the “The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study” (ACE) reveals the need to start the healing process sooner than later. The study revealed how exposure to what they called “Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), can shorten life expectancy. Things like: parental separation or divorce, physical or emotional neglect, physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; parental mental illness, or domestic violence etc… can negatively impact the developing brains and bodies of children. For every exposure to ACEs you would get a point on your ACE score. They then correlated each person’s ACE scores against health outcomes, the higher your “ACE scores” the worst your health outcomes. MRI scans, of participants with higher ACE scores revealed measurable differences in the amygdala, the brain’s fear response center.
You may be wondering at this point how this relates to healing from emotional trauma. I’m sure you have heard of the body’s stress response system also known as our fight-or-flight response. Imagine for a moment you are face to face with a ferocious beast! All your senses become heightened as adrenaline starts coursing through your body! Your survival instincts kick in, your fight or flight response has now been activated. What emotions are you feeling fear, dread, anxiety, etc. While in survival mode, the emotions we experience can be stored energetically in our bodies. Since negative emotions carry a lower energy signature than positive emotions, they can jam up your energy systems and cause energy blockages. Subsequently, these blockages can become triggered or activated the next time you are faced with a similar situation.
The Link Between Childhood Trauma and Poor Health
What’s further, science is now proving that these trapped negative emotions can affect our health and life expectancy as well. The link between high ACE scores and worst health outcomes supports those findings. Sobering, isn’t it? Constant exposure to “Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), puts you into survival mode over and over and over again. According to Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris: “it goes from being adaptive, or life-saving, to maladaptive, or health-damaging. Children are especially sensitive to this repeated stress activation, because their brains and bodies are just developing. High doses of adversity affect brain structure and function. Notably, adversity also, affects the developing immune system, developing hormonal systems, and even the way our DNA is read and transcribed”.
ACEs are very common, 65% of the population has ACEs and unfortunately this is not something we outgrow. Our past experiences whether in childhood or adulthood do affect our future behaviors. Now science has proven it affects our health as well. The good news is, there is hope. Negative energies trapped because of negative life experiences can be transformed and released from our bodies.
